Description
What the Pap Smear Checks
- Abnormal cervical cells that may develop into cervical cancer if left untreated
- Cell changes commonly caused by HPV (human papillomavirus)
- Early inflammation, irritation or lesions on the cervix that need monitoring
- Overall cervical health status for long-term reproductive planning
A Pap smear is a screening test. It is not only for women with symptoms. It is designed to catch early changes before you feel pain, discharge or bleeding.
Who Should Get a Pap Smear
- Women who are sexually active
- Women aged 25 and above, even with no symptoms
- Women with a new partner or multiple past partners
- Women with a history of HPV, irregular bleeding or previous abnormal Pap results
- Women planning long-term family health who want peace of mind
If you have unusual bleeding, pelvic discomfort, persistent discharge or pain during intercourse, you should inform the doctor during the visit.
How the Pap Smear Is Done
- Consultation
Brief discussion of menstrual history, sexual history, contraception, previous Pap smear results and any current symptoms. - Sample Collection
A small, gentle brush or spatula is used to collect cells from the cervix. This usually takes a few seconds. Most patients describe it as pressure or mild discomfort rather than pain. - Laboratory Analysis
The collected cells are sent for lab examination to check for abnormal changes. - Follow-Up Plan
The clinic will advise whether the result is normal, needs repeat screening after a certain interval, or needs further investigation. You will also be advised on HPV vaccination, safer practices and future screening schedule.
